PERFORMATIVE RESEARCH IN THE FACE OF CIVILIZATIONAL CHALLENGES

Project

We are living in a time of unprecedented change. The climate is transforming before our eyes, artificial intelligence is advancing at a surprising pace, a neighboring country is fighting for its sovereignty, and our well-being and current way of life are being put to the test. In discussions about the challenges facing businesses, the word "adaptation" is increasingly coming to the forefront. The question is: how?

The project "Performative Research in the Face of Civilizational Challenges" aims to create a new method of action that combines artistic sensitivity and insight, scientific methodology, and a critical framework with business and institutional pragmatism. At the heart of the project is the belief that art generates knowledge and solutions that can be more concretely realized through science, and then implemented in collaboration with business and social partners. The activities will be carried out directly for selected target groups. The project’s outcomes will also be made available to others in the form of archives and a catalog of best practices, enabling their use and adaptation in various contexts. The multi-year perspective (2024-2026) will allow interdisciplinary teams to work in a developmental and systematic manner under favorable conditions.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Residencies

Five international residencies will bring together teams of artists, scientists, and industry specialists. These teams will use performative arts tools to create concrete responses to some of the biggest civilizational challenges.

Best Practices Database

Each residency will serve as an experiment in moderating effective collaboration among interdisciplinary teams. The project will culminate in the publication of a catalog of best practices, complete with data archives and research findings.

International Symposium

In 2026, we will host an international symposium to share the results of the project and to learn from similar initiatives around the world.

Publication

We will publish a book that details best practices, showcasing their application in business and economics alongside experts and practitioners. The project aims not only to develop solutions for selected problems but also to redefine the future of research and education. By developing new methodologies and approaches that promote the synergy of art, science, and entrepreneurship, this initiative aspires to shape new generations of innovators.

METHOD

IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT, DO IT DIFFERENTLY!

The project aims to develop methods for effectively solving organizational problems using the unconventional and performative tools of rebel artists. This method, conceived by Dr. Tomasz Ciesielski and Dr. Błażej Filanowski, is part of the broader reflection on performative research. This relatively new type of research combines artistic practices with scientific methods to generate knowledge and transform reality. The research process is conducted in an egalitarian and solidaristic manner, meaning that every participant, regardless of their role, is treated with equal respect.

Performative research draws on methods from various fields, integrating qualitative, quantitative, and artistic approaches to gain a deeper understanding of the issues being studied and to propose concrete implementations.

These studies are carried out through practice—real, repeatable actions performed by participants. The research process often begins with intuition or existing experiences and challenges rather than a formulated question or hypothesis. It is characterized by a broad scope, encompassing many different topics. Instead of disregarding these tangential threads, performative research utilizes them and, if necessary, shifts the central research questions to focus on them.

The research also takes into account the political context of choosing topics and conducting the research process, with an emphasis on less privileged areas.

COLLABORATION

Our collaboration within the project can take various forms throughout its duration (2024-2026):

Knowledge and Expertise

Selected artists from the open call, along with researchers and specialists engaged by us, may require external expertise. We are creating a database of consultants representing different organizations. If a need arises during one of the five project modules—technology, well-being, climate, security, communication—the designated specialist from the organization will be asked to meet with our team at least twice. They will share their knowledge and provide expert feedback on the project being implemented.

Communication

The synergy between science, art, and business is not self-evident. We invite interested organizations to become partners in the project’s communication efforts. This will help us raise public awareness about the innovations generated by such activities and, in the long term, increase the chances of implementing the developed solutions. The scope of communication collaboration will be subject to agreements. It will be a two-way process—our team will also inform our channels about the partner's involvement.

Co-Responsibility

We believe that the issues we address affect diverse social groups and have a direct impact on business and social organizations. We invite these organizations to become patrons or co-organizers of the project. Taking on this role will involve both a tangible or financial contribution to the project's implementation and participation in shaping its direction through joint decision-making on project selection.

Collaboration Beyond the Project Scope

Is your organization facing a challenge that requires a creative solution? Talk to us about how artists might address it using their unique skills and perspectives. Join as a project partner and co-finance it, allowing us to select artists in the call who will work with our team to find an appropriate solution. The developed prototype will be tested together to ensure it meets all requirements and is effective. We will then propose tools for implementing the solution so your organization can fully leverage its potential.
